Dear Terra,

I love the convenience of long handled butane lighters for candles and camping, but am conflicted since most are disposable and I’m trying to reduce plastic in my home and petroleum products like butane. I really don’t want to go back to matches! Any suggestions?

Dear Going Matchless,

Yes! I’ve just been reading about electric, or plasma, lighters. They’re rechargeable and environmentally friendly. Traditional lighters use butane to spark a flame, but electric ones utilize an electric “arc” rather than fire. Since these lighters don’t require a flame, they are essentially wind-proof.

They come in different shapes and styles, with different features, so be sure to look at several to find the one best suited to you. Most, but not all, are childproof so look for that when purchasing. They are available at many local stores as well as online.

They vary greatly in price and features, so you might want to check out sites like the ones below to better understand your options.
