Featured Bed of the Week will return in 2023!

In 2022 this raised bed was bursting with both blooms and veggies! Tiny tomato plants were bearing tiny tomatoes. An unusual purple-and-white Lupine was growing a second bloom atop the first. Merry Marigolds helped to deter unfriendly bugs.  Multiple colors of Dahlias delighted the eyes and had carefully placed stakes nearby in case of a growth spurt.  The front border of the bed was graced with purple Alyssum, and the whole bed had a feeling Read more…

Featured Bed of the Week for July 15

These folks really know how to plant a garden! In the small space of their raised bed can be found beans, various lettuces, a squash/zucchini/pumpkin (?) and Marigolds.  Clever structures support the beans at either end, while the center has neat rows of lettuce ready to pop into a fresh salad. And, if you look closely, you can see a tiny Ladybug House, created by the visiting Daisy Troop 2201. Congratulations to the Baker Family Read more…

Dear Terra will no longer be a weekly column.

BOXED Water?!?

Caring for Creation Recently some folks on Terra’s team found boxed water available at local grocery stores like Yokes. “Boxed water,” you say? Brands like Boxed Water is Better and Just Water come in paper cartons, like the TetraPak cartons you buy soup or coconut water in. But are they better than plastic bottles? All packaged water (in plastic, aluminum or paper) is, in most cased, 100% unnecessary and a drain on Earth’s valuable resources. Read more…

Dear Terra—Wonderful Water

Dear Terra, I love being out in the sunshine at the lakes and rivers we are blessed with in the Northwest. What can I do to keep them pristine? Lovin’ the Sun Dear Lovin’ the Sun, Clean water is one of our greatest resources and it’s everyone’s job to keep it that way. Here are things to keep in mind. *Keep trash out of the water, especially plastic of all types. *Avoid excessive use of Read more…

Dear Terra…Earth-Friendly Summer Fun

Dear Terra Camping and picnicking season is here, and I dread the bags of garbage that come with it. Any ideas? Crushed by Trash The reason we spend time outdoors is to enjoy the natural beauty, right? So why trash it with disposable plastics? Here are some ways to slow the trash train: Dishes–As Girl Scouts, we had one plate, cup and utensil set which we washed, rinsed, and hung to dry in our “ditty Read more…

Dear Terra… A “Lighter” Topic

Dear Terra, I love the convenience of long handled butane lighters for candles and camping, but am conflicted since most are disposable and I’m trying to reduce plastic in my home and petroleum products like butane. I really don’t want to go back to matches! Any suggestions? Going Matchless Dear Going Matchless, Yes! I’ve just been reading about electric, or plasma, lighters. They’re rechargeable and environmentally friendly. Traditional lighters use butane to spark a flame, Read more…

EARTH DAY… Terra remembers!

Do you remember the first Earth Day? Terra does! Today is the 52nd anniversary of that original celebration, so let’s take a look at the history of Earth Day. In the 1960s, factories still spewed black clouds of toxic smoke into the air and dumped toxic sludge into waterways with no legal restrictions. A handful of groups were growing concerned about the link between pollution, pesticides, loss of wilderness and the health of the environment, Read more…

Terra Talks

During Lent, we’ve talked about fasting from things that damage creation, feasting on things that bless and promote earth health, learning about how the planet is being altered, and giving to groups actively working to control climate change. This week, consider acting in one new way to protect God’s precious world. Find alternative ways to keep used/unwanted goods out of the trash. Even worn items may have another use! Designate a spot to put unneeded items Read more…

Terra Talks

As we continue to walk through Lent with fasting, feasting and learning, let’s look at almsgiving as a straightforward way to care for the Earth. Financially supporting groups working for environmental justice/climate change, both locally or abroad, allows us to have a greater impact in protecting God’s world. Whether you can give support monetarily or by following/joining a group, look for ways to increase your participation. Below are links to a few groups that members Read more…
