Bed C8 & C13, Tended by Kori & Matt and “the boys”
Kori and Matt have a beautifully organized bed in C13. (C8, too, has discernible form, but plants have had their way… ) This is their second year of gardening in ECG, and we are most happy to have them. Kori sits on the Gardeneers Advisory Committee, and their oldest son built the addition onto the shed as an Eagle Scout project last year. He and his brother attend high school and keep their parents jumping! The family also enjoys cooking, camping and the outdoors. They often walk their two dogs in the Gleneden neighborhood, as well.
Kori says she grew up with large vegetable gardens and has dabbled at it as an adult to limited success. She is certainly successful here! She is the green bean lover and has had an awesome turnout with beans both years at ECG. The best part, Kori says, is, “they taste just like the ones my mom grew when I was a kid” in Puyallup.
Matt’s the pumpkin grower; he is beyond thrilled with these successes after years of trying to grow them in our backyard in GA and one year here… the mold would set in before the fruit could grow. (He has done a great job keeping that awful powdery mildew at bay! What’s your secret, Matt?) The pumpkins in bed C13 are HUGE! They will be used in the family’s annual pumpkin carving event.
He also planted two sunflowers as a joke, thinking they were small ones but they turned out to be his eight-year-old stash of giant seeds. The biggest one was nine feet tall and the flowers was 20 inches in diameter. Sadly, all that now remains are the 3-4’ diameter stumps of the giant stalks. Kori and Matt will be drying the sunflower seeds and using them in the bird feeders this winter.
We basically plant things we love- peas, zucchini, cucumbers, carrots, tomatoes, peppers, green beans and pumpkins.
The family are conscientious consumers, making the effort to purchase their produce year-round from sources as local as possible. Thank you!
Kori says, “The last two years at Eden have been a complete joy–and a success. We are often in the Garden late afternoons or early evenings, most times the only ones there. We spend time working our beds, weeding or just simply enjoying the peace the garden brings.”
Congratulations to Kori and Matt, proud “plant parents” of Beds C13 and C8 here at li’l ol’ Eden Community Gardens.
